Who Should Not Use Invisalign?

If you are looking for options for teeth straightening, you may have considered Invisalign in Westport, MA. This system of aligners can help some patients gently straighten their teeth without the need for traditional braces. There are limitations, however, to the effectiveness of these aligners. The team at Westport Dental can help you better understand your options. Dr. Sathvik Seshadri, Dr. Shikha Chopra, and Dr. Paola Buckley are here to help. Let's look at a few instances in which clear aligners would not be the best option and traditional braces should be considered.

Young Children

Invisible aligners are intended for teens and adults. This oral device is not effective for children who have not yet lost all of their baby teeth. It is imperative that all baby teeth have fallen out, and that adult teeth have fully emerged before this method can be used.

Low Device Tolerance

The aligner device will need to be worn approximately 22 hours a day in order to be effective. If an individual does not have the tolerance to keep the device in for this amount of time, then this method is not recommended.

Severe Overbite

Patients who need to have a severe overbite corrected should consider traditional braces rather than Invisalign in Westport, MA. The aligners are not designed to correct this problem.

Abnormal Tooth Shape

If a patient has teeth that are abnormally shaped, the aligners will not be effective. Abnormal tooth shape is a separate issue that will need to be corrected in addition to straightening.

Severely Rotated Teeth

Teeth that are severely rotated out of place will need traditional orthodontic care in order to correct positioning. Aligners will not create the needed pressure to push these teeth into proper alignment.
